Shimotori Shopping Arcade
Shimotori Shopping Arcade is a shopping street in central Kumamoto City. With streetcar stops and the bus terminal nearby, it’s very accessible and lively. The arcade roof allows comfortable shopping regardless of weather. Kumamoto Castle is nearby, making it popular with tourists. There are about 175 shops, and it’s also famous as a gourmet street. During the Higo Doll Festival, the arcade is filled with Hina decorations, and there is also a chance to try on a formal 12-layer kimono (photos allowed). In summer, a yukata festival is held, and events like the Ginkgo Festival and Higo no Tsuritemari take place. The Fujisaki Hachimangu Autumn Grand Festival, Kumamoto Prefecture’s largest festival, draws around 300,000 people each year. Its parade offerings and the decorated horses by over 60 groups are a must-see. Children’s voices, trumpets, and drums fill the street with energy, and many food stalls appear—making it a major local event. Access: about a 1-minute walk from the Kumamoto City Tram Torichosuji stop.
