Statue of Momotaro

The Momotaro Statue is located about a 1-minute walk from JR Okayama Station. It depicts Momotaro and the three companions said to have joined him in defeating oni: a monkey, a dog, and a pheasant. Because it stands right in front of Okayama’s main station, it’s a popular sightseeing spot you can easily drop by during tourism or business trips, and it’s also often used as a meeting point. Most Japanese people know the Momotaro story well and may imagine a cute character from picture books or animation, but the Momotaro statue’s face looks brave, and the monkey, dog, and pheasant also appear strong—this gap may surprise you. Around the statue there is a flowerbed, surrounding it with charming flowers, making it very photogenic. Being right by the main station is also a big plus—you don’t need to go out of your way. Since Momotaro is considered a symbol of Okayama, be sure to stop by during your visit.
