Hita Mamedamachi Shopping Street
Hita Mameda-machi Shopping Street is a traditional shopping district in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Historically, Hita was a castle town where the Hita Magistrate’s Office was established during the Edo period. Mameda-machi was the area where merchants were especially concentrated, and even today the town is lined with old merchant houses and storehouses, creating an atmospheric streetscape that feels like stepping back in time. The Hita Mameda-machi Shopping Street is made up of two areas: the Mameda Kamimachi Shopping Association and the Mameda Miyuki-dori Shopping Street. The entire Mameda district offers public Wi-Fi, making sightseeing more convenient. Within the shopping streets, you can still find long-established shops such as pharmacies that have operated since the Edo period, as well as miso and soy sauce stores, making it a retro, culture-rich tourist destination. Kimono dressing experiences are also available, and strolling the historic streets in kimono is highly recommended. Because there are items you can only buy here, it’s a good idea to make one full loop first and then shop for souvenirs efficiently. There are also rickshaw rides, letting you feel the charm and nostalgia of the old town scenery up close. Access to Hita Mameda-machi Shopping Street is about a 15-minute walk from Hita Station.
