Megijima

Megijima is a small Seto Inland Sea island in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, famous as the island of the Onigashima (Demon Island) legend. From Washigamine Observatory at the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea. Near the top is a cave said to have been where demons lived, and you can visit the Onigashima Great Cave (paid). The island is small (about 4 km north-northeast length and about 1 km northwest width) and has very little car traffic, and there are no taxis. To reach the summit area with the caves, a retro bus—nicknamed the “onboro bus”—runs regularly. Energetic visitors can also hike up; doing only one direction on foot is also fine. Walking down offers beautiful sea views. In spring, it’s also popular for cherry blossoms. Art from the Setouchi Triennale is scattered everywhere, and even the ferry terminal has art. In summer, a well-maintained beach allows swimming, and a former elementary school has also been turned into art. Cats are common across the island, adding to its charm. (Ogi-jima has even more cats, and you can take a ferry from Megi-jima.) Access: about 20 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port.
