Experience details
At the Kondo, pay respects to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing, who has been the focus of pilgrims’ prayers for centuries. Learn how the Shikoku pilgrimage is not only a physical journey but also a path of introspection, believed to cleanse worldly desires and offer protection from misfortune. Continuing through the temple grounds, you will pass the five-story pagoda and ancient camphor trees, gradually entering the quieter, more contemplative area of the temple complex.
At Henjokaku Hall, take part in the “Osunafumi” experience, a symbolic mini-pilgrimage where stepping on sacred sand is said to bring the same spiritual merit as visiting all 88 temples. This quiet, individual ritual offers a rare moment of stillness and reflection. You will then visit the Mieido Hall, one of the most important sites in Zentsuji, marking Kukai’s birthplace and a center of deep devotion.
The experience continues with a visit to the Kaidan Meguri, an underground passage walked in complete darkness. Before entering, your guide will explain its meaning: the darkness represents human confusion and desire, the act of walking symbolizes spiritual training, and the eventual encounter with light represents enlightenment. This powerful, introspective experience encourages you to confront your inner self.
Finally, explore the treasure hall, where selected artifacts and teachings are introduced to deepen your understanding of Kukai’s legacy and Buddhist culture. The tour concludes at the temple grounds, where you revisit the initial questions and reflect on your own perspective, leaving with a deeper appreciation of why this spiritual journey continues to resonate across generations.
