Experience details

Step into Marugame Castle, one of Japan’s twelve original surviving castles, and experience it not just as a historic site, but as a carefully designed defensive system. Your journey begins at the base of the castle, where your guide introduces the concept of “attacking” the castle—not physically, but by understanding how its layout was meant to challenge and stop invading forces.

As you begin your ascent, you’ll encounter the impressive multi-layered stone walls, rising to a total height of 60 meters—the tallest in Japan. At the main gate, learn how attackers would have been exposed to defensive fire, and how the castle’s layout forced them into vulnerable positions. Moving through the inner gates and steep paths, you’ll explore the clever use of space, elevation, and barriers that made this fortress so difficult to conquer.

Climbing further, you’ll pass through the dramatic stone-lined slopes and reach the inner baileys, where stories of construction, local legends, and the immense effort required to build the castle come to life. At the top, enter the compact yet authentic wooden keep, one of the smallest among Japan’s original castles. Inside, your guide will explain key defensive features such as loopholes and stone-dropping openings, as well as traditional construction methods that have allowed the structure to survive for centuries.

From the top floor, take in sweeping panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and surrounding city, and understand how this vantage point played a crucial role in defense. After capturing photos and enjoying the scenery, descend along the same route, where you’ll also learn about the modern challenges of preserving such historic structures, including recent stone wall restoration efforts.

By the end of the tour, you will have gained not only a clear understanding of Marugame Castle’s design and history, but also a unique perspective—seeing the castle through the eyes of both its defenders and those who once attempted to conquer it.
