Ishiteji Temple is the 51st temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a sacred route associated with Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Pilgrims, known as “”Ohenro,”” believe that visiting all 88 temples purifies worldly desires and fulfills wishes. Ishiteji, located near the Dogo Onsen area, was founded in 728 and was originally called Anyoji Temple. According to legend, the temple was renamed after a stone held in the hand of a reincarnated child linked to Emon Saburo, the first pilgrim. The temple’s treasure hall displays this legendary stone. Highlights include a 16-meter-tall statue of Kobo Daishi, a miniature pilgrimage route, and the National Treasure Niomon Gate. Touching the giant straw sandals hanging at the gate and then touching an ailing part of the body is said to bring healing. Incense smoke is also believed to have curative powers. At the temple entrance, visitors can purchase the local specialty grilled rice cakes, making Ishiteji both a spiritual and cultural attraction.
