Begin your tour at Kyoto Tower, the tallest structure in Kyoto with its observation deck at 100 meters and its spire at 131 meters. It offers a panoramic view of the city, including the traditional temples, modern buildings, and the surrounding mountains. Head to the observation deck for a quick look at Kyoto's layout. There are also interactive displays to help you spot famous landmarks from the top.
From Kyoto Tower, take a short walk to Higashi Honganji. This is one of the largest temples in Kyoto and the headquarters of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. Founded in 1602, the temple complex is impressive with its massive wooden structures, including the Goeido Hall, which is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Spend about 30 minutes walking through the serene grounds and appreciating the architecture.
Next, head to Toji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's famous for its five-story pagoda, which is the tallest in Japan at 57 meters. The temple was originally established in the 8th century and has significant cultural importance. The pagoda is a highlight, but you can also explore the temple gardens and smaller structures. Also, do not forget the magnificent Buddhist statues at the Kondo and Kodo halls!
