Go Around Town In Kabuki Make Up! Course

There’s nothing quite as cool as Kabuki make up, is there? Even among the various styles, Kumadori, which itself differs based on roles, especially emphasizes the performer’s expression through the contrast of shading. In this course, you won’t have to change as you simply get into make up and head out into Namba, Osaka’s biggest shopping district. Without a doubt, you will receive plenty of looks. All right!! Why don’t you become a Kabuki star? (You can also make an Oshiguma as a souvenir.)

Kabuki Dance “Renjishi” Transformation Course

Kabuki is a proud world heritage (intangible cultural heritage) of Japan. In this course, you will transform into a renjishi, a type of character in Kabuki. The venue is a dance studio for practicing traditional Japanese dance. The instructor, who works with actively performing Kabuki actors, will help a small group make a fun and proper Kabuki transformation. 1. First, for the practice, you will change into a yukata. 2. After getting changed, you will learn the gestures for fighting scenes. Next, you will learn how to move in a kimono (while in the yukata) as well as how to make the signature pose of Kabuki, mie. 3. Next, you’ll put on Kabuki make up in Kumadori style, change into the proper clothing, and finish with the wig! After the transformation is complete, you will first take a picture in full costume striking the signature pose. Finally, you will take a prepared piece of cloth and make an impression with the make up by pressing it against your face. This is called an Oshiguma, which you can take home as a souvenir.

  • Ryota
    English, Japanese

Hello. My name is Ryota. Please call me "Ryo" for short. I'm a government-licensed tour guide-interpreter. Soon after I was born in chiba prefecture, I was taken to Kansai region where I grew up. I love music, history, and the Japanese culture, but science is not my cup of tea. I'll pull out all the stops to lead you to a deep insight into the Japanese cultural aspect like the difference between a buddhist temple and a shinto shrine and the Japanese way of thinking. I assure you that my guiding will knock your socks off. You can take my word for it.
