2021-03-12 Management office

"Tsutenkaku", the symbol of Shinsekai, the "Eiffel Tower of Naniwa", is a 103-meter-high observatory.
The Shinsekai area where such a tourist attraction "Tsutenkaku Tower" is located used to be an entertainment district where workers gathered, and the old streets of the Showa period still remain without much sectional maintenance.

It is still a place where locals enjoy food and entertainment, but recently the number of tourists visiting Shinsekai has been increasing as they seek out the local and deep stores in the area. One of the reasons for the popularity of Shinsekai is its easy accessibility, as it is close to Namba and Shinsaibashi.

In this article, we will introduce some of the cheap and tasty B-class gourmet restaurants in Shinsekai that both locals and visitors from far away have heard about.

One of the characteristics of this restaurant's kushikatsu is the large size of the ingredients, especially the plump prawns, which are said to be the best.

Popular menu item "Doteyaki"

In addition to kushikatsu, another popular menu item is Doteyaki, which is served in sets of three skewers. (Doteyaki is beef tendon stewed in white miso paste.) It is served with a dash of flavor, blended in a marinade that has been passed down since the restaurant's opening.

"Yaekatsu" has many repeat customers who want to eat there even if they have to wait in line, partly because it is cosy and offers a taste of kote kote Osaka.

The interior of the restaurant has a retro feel, as if you have stepped back in time.

The Osaka-born "Heret Katsu Sandwich"

Nonkiya

Standing bar open from 8:00 a.m.

Located in Janjan Yokocho, Nonkiya is a standing bar with a reputation for its oden and doteyaki. 130 yen per piece, the doteyaki is a very tasty dish with a crunchy texture and sweet sauce.

Oden ingredients come in a wide variety of stuff.

The onion oden is especially famous. A whole onion soaks up the broth and comes out tender. It is a delicacy when eaten with mustard while breaking it up with chopsticks.
Another characteristic of "Nonkiya" is that it has many unusual ingredients. They offer oden with many kinds of vegetables, including curry-flavored lettuce, cabbage, potherb mustard, okra, garland chrysanthemum, and chives. These vegetables are served after the raw vegetables are quickly added to the oden pot and lightly simmered. This quirky oden is written on a light blue tag, so if you are interested in this dish, please ask for it.

Since the restaurant opens early in the morning, it is usually fully booked by mid-afternoon, so it is best to time your visit accordingly.

Kankan

Authentic Osaka Takoyaki

Osaka is famous for its flour-based food. One of the best places in Shinsekai where you can enjoy takoyaki that is unmistakably Osaka is the red-roofed takoyaki shop Kankan. Kankan offers delicious takoyaki for as low as 350 yen for a package of 8 takoyaki. You can enjoy authentic Osaka takoyaki with a crispy outside and a fluffy, tender inside.

Delicious even when eaten as is.

Because the dashi (Japanese soup stock) is used to dissolve the flour, the dough has a strong flavor, and many customers order without toppings. For first-timers, we recommend eating half of the dough baked as it is, and the other half with sauce, mayonnaise, and dried bonito flakes.

Kitaya

Takoyaki with fluffy green onion on top

Kitaya offers a different type of takoyaki than the one introduced earlier at Kankan.
The takoyaki, priced at 300 yen for 6 pieces, are fluffy both on the outside and inside, and feature a strange texture with konnyaku (kelp) inside in addition to octopus. The flavors include sauce, rock salt, Kansai dashi soy sauce, and ponzu (Japanese citrus juice), and the mayonnaise is topped with green onions instead of dried bonito flakes. (They ask if you want mayonnaise and green onion on top.)

In addition to takoyaki, the 150 yen "takosen" is also popular, and is a very satisfying sandwich of two takoyaki seasoned with sauce.
