Tsutenkaku is an observation tower in the middle of the Shinsekai district and is hailed as one of the main symbols of Osaka. It is registered as one of the National Tangible Cultural Heritage sites and attracts countless visitors even today. Its original design back in 1912 featured a base modelled after the Arch of Triumph with a replica of the Eiffel Tower on top. With a total height of 64 meters it was the tallest building of its kind in Japan and renowned as a prime lookout spot. It was heavily damaged during the 2nd World War and its remains disassembled for war effort, however it was later rebuilt in 1956 due to the large popular demand and nostalgia of the local populace. The current tower is 103 meters tall, almost twice the height of the original one. The observation deck on the 5th floor features glass panels from top to bottom. The extended viewing platforms TIP THE TSUTENKAKU are also completely see-through, making the visitors feel as if they were floating in the sky. The Shinsekai area in which the Tsutenkaku tower is located is also renowned for its retro atmosphere with nostalgic shops, “kushi” skewer or offal hotpot restaurants, making it a great place to enjoy true Osaka culture.

Shitennoji Temple (Central Building, Main Temple Gardens)

Shitennoji is believed to be the oldest state-sponsored Buddhist temple of Japan, one of the seven temples built by the legendary prince Shotoku Taishi. The total surface area of Shitennoji is 110,000 square meters and even though the whole area is commonly referred to as Shitennoji, the most accurate definition would refer primarily to the central building on the temple grounds. The five-story pagoda, the golden hall and the lecture hall are all lined up in one line, with white gravel spread out throughout the temple grounds. Under normal circumstances an entrance fee is required to visit the temple, however for select temple festivities like the days commemorating Kobo Daishi or Shotoku Taishi, as well as spring and autumn equinox festivals visitors can enter the main hall for free. Even though the Shitennoji Temple alone is a sight to behold, the area in which it is located is famous for its many excellent tourist attractions. Apart from Tennoji Park and the ZOO, there is no shortage of shopping malls, restaurants and more.

Tozaiya - Kojiro Hayashi’s Chindon Entertainment Hall

A long time ago there was a cultural phenomena in Japan called the “Chin-don-ya”. Its name was based on onomatopoeia, derived from the sounds of percussion instruments. The chindonya were somewhat of performers, whose main role was to dress in flashy robes and play loud instruments for the purpose of advertising of products, businesses and venues. The flashier, the more attention they would gather, thus the stronger the advertising effect. The artistic group “Chindon Entertainment” by Kojiro Hayashi is acknowledged by the local government as a true chindonya, popular not just all over Japan but often invited for performances abroad as well. Originally the chindonya were supposed to be a wandering troupe, not tied down to a single location e.g. theater, however the Chindon Entertainment Hall located in the “Space 9” on the 9th floor of Abeno Harukas offers regular performances for visitors.
In its vicinity there are countless shops and venues of all sorts and genres, like the Q’s Mall, Kinei Apollo, Abeno And, and many more.
