Activity Information

Learn the shamisen from a former geisha, with teaching experience in a junior high school!

The instructor has over 20 years experience teaching cooking in a junior high school. She can only speak Japanese, but music has no borders. Learn the basics from how to hold and strum the shamisen to how to read music with easy to understand instructions and body language. In 30 minutes, you'll be able to play the Japanese song "Sakura Sakura." There are 2 courses. In the Shamisen Lesson, you'll learn one more song. In the Shamisen + Japanese Culture Experience, after the lesson (40 mins), you'll get to experience the hospitality of a geisha, "Ozashiki Asobi" (20 mins) Then, enjoy tea and snacks during a short shamisen performance (20 mins). You'll also get to wear a kimono, which you can take pictures in (10 mins). (Approximate Time)

10 minutes from Namba/Tennoji by train. Near Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, one of Japan's famous shrines.

From Namba, take the Nankai Koya Local Line for about 10 minutes and get off at Sumiyoshihigashi Station. Exit the ticket gate on the same side as the platform you arrive on. From Tennoji, take the Hankai Tramway Uemachi Line also for about 10 minutes to Tezukayama-4chome or Kaminoki Station. It's about 4~5 minutes walking from any of the stationsi. Across the street from the venue are a bathhouse and a bar. There's a sign for Otomeza next to the entrance. Also nearby is the Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. It's great for a walk afterwards.

Held in the tatami room of a 90-year-old private residence.

You'll have the lesson in a tea room with tatami flooring and sliding doors. The alcove also has wall scrolls and samurai figures (May) or princess dolls (March) for a truly Japanese atmosphere. You normally kneel directly on the tatami, but chairs can also be provided for the lesson.

In the performance, listen to different genres of traditional Japanese music, using shamisen!

In the Shamisen + Japanese Culture Experience, enjoy a performance with completely different genres of music using the shamisen. From epic songs and ballads used in Kabuki or Japanese theater, to songs sung by geisha, to folk songs, to Tsugaru Shamisen, enjoy a variety of shamisen music.

Have some tea and Japanese sweets. Take pictures in a kimono. Receive a small handmade souvenir.

After the lesson, take part in an "Ozashiki Asobi." Next, listen to a short performance while you enjoy some tea and Japanese sweets. Then, choose a kimono that you like. You can wear it over your clothes so it's quick and easy to put on. Take pictures. Finally, you'll receive a Japanese lucky charm to take home as a souvenir. It's filled with 10 tiny different-colored paper cranes. This also comes in the Shamisen Lesson.
