Nakamachi Street

City of warehouses

Matsumoto City in Nagano Prefecture has a castle town with a history spanning more than 400 years around "the national treasure Matsumoto Castle ". Among them, "Nakamachi-dori "along Zenkoji-kaido Road is a street where many warehouse-style buildings built between the Edo and Taisho periods still remain. The street was once home to kimono wholesalers and sake breweries, but today it is lined with fashionable cafes and souvenir shops that use warehouses, making it a popular historical landmark as well as a casual sightseeing spot.

The reason for the birth of the kura-zukuri town was due to frequent large fires. At the end of the Edo period and during the Meiji period (1868-1912), major fires occurred many times, destroying major facilities and town houses. The wisdom of merchants and townspeople led to the construction of storehouse buildings, and many of these storehouses and other valuable structures still remain today. Many traditional Matsumoto crafts and folk art are sold here, making it a perfect place for a first trip to Nagano.

Nakamachi Kura-no-Kaikan (Nakamachi Kura-Shikkan)

With three warehouses surrounding a courtyard and an additional plaza with a pump well "Kura Chic Kan ", visitors can fully appreciate the beautiful interior architecture of the warehouses. This is a lively spot where events such as theatrical performances, yose, concerts, and fortune-telling are held, and various artists exhibit and sell their illustrations and accessories. Various events are held for limited periods, and there are accessories and other items that can only be purchased at that time, so you may find a bargain if you stop by.

"Cafe time at Nakamachi, Kurashikan SABO (tea house) "

Inside a 140-year-old warehouse built in the Meiji era (1868-1912), there are crafts and folk artifacts related to Matsumoto City, as well as a cafe where visitors can enjoy sweets such as kintsuba and cakes from Nakamachi's confectionery shop.
"At Nakamachi Kurashikan SABO (Tea House) ", you can enjoy a relaxing café time while gazing at the carefully maintained Japanese garden. "Light meals such as beef curry "are also available, so you will be satisfied even if you visit at lunch time.

Japan's Shortest Morning Market

Also, "morning market "is held on Saturdays from April to December on Nakamachi Street, where nearby farmers sell seasonal flowers, fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms. The quality and inexpensive morning market opens at 9:30 a.m. Some stores sell out as soon as they start, and it is also called "the shortest morning market in Japan ".

"Also rumored to be the model for Spirited Away "

"Buildings that are said to be models for Aburaya "exist in Taiwan and other parts of the world, but this inn is also "designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property "and offers atmospheric architecture of the early Showa period.

All rooms have different designs

All 29 rooms have different designs, and all remain as they were made by palace carpenters and other craftsmen of the time. Each room was built in a different period, so you can enjoy choosing your favorite room when you make a reservation. Trends from the Meiji period to the Showa period can be seen everywhere, and you can enjoy the detailed architectural beauty in every corner of the rooms.

Shibu Onsen, a hot spring with free-flowing hot-spring water

At this inn, you can enjoy Shibu hot spring water from the source in as many as eight bathtubs, and enjoy high-quality natural hot spring water in the large baths and open-air baths. "The baths are tastefully designed, and you can also see beautiful stained glass windows featuring the motif of "the Black Dragon of Onuma Pond "a folk tale from Nagano Prefecture that has also been broadcast in the TV animation Manga Nihon Mukashi Banashi ".

Unfortunately, the inn is not open for day-trip bathing or drop-in baths, and only guests are allowed to enter the precious hot springs. If you visit Nagano, you must see this inn with its wonderful architecture at least once.
